Hang up to five items: shelves, mirrors and art in one visit

Sometimes the list is not one big job but a handful of small ones: a mirror in the hall, a couple of pictures, a shelf in the bathroom, a set of hooks. Doing them in one visit makes sense because the pro is already there with the tools out. This guide explains how a hang-up-to-five-items visit is scoped, how to prepare, and what can turn a simple list into something larger.

Before you book

Make a list. Write down each item, roughly how big and heavy it is, and where you want it. A tape-marked position on the wall for each one makes the visit far quicker. Group the items by room so the pro can work through the house in a sensible order.

Check how each item hangs. Frames with wires or plates, mirrors with brackets, and shelves with their own hardware should all be to hand. Keep the small parts that came in each box. Decide which items are the heavy ones, because they set how the visit is planned.

The visit is meant for up to five ordinary items such as shelves, mirrors and art. If you have a TV, a large gallery wall, closet shelving or curtain rods across many windows, tell us, because those are scoped as their own jobs. Let us know if more than five items are on your list too.

Why wall type matters

Start with the wall, because it decides everything else. Modern drywall over wood studs is the easy case: you can fasten into a stud for weight, or use a proper drywall anchor for something light. Older homes across the Chicago suburbs often have plaster over wood lath. Plaster is hard and brittle, it cracks and chips if drilled carelessly, and ordinary anchors can loosen in it, so the pro will pre-drill gently and choose fasteners to suit. Brick, stone and block need masonry bits and masonry anchors and take noticeably longer. Studs are usually sixteen inches apart in a house wall, but that is only a habit, not a rule, and older or renovated walls surprise everyone.

With several items across several rooms you may meet several wall types in one visit: drywall in the living room, plaster in the older part of the house, tile in the bathroom, and maybe a brick fireplace or basement wall. Tell us about each location. Heavy items go into studs where they can, and lighter ones use anchors chosen for the surface.

What the visit involves

The pro walks through the list with you, confirms each position and height, and checks the walls for studs and any hidden services as far as practical. Each item is marked with a level, fastened with hardware suited to its weight and wall, checked for level and firmness, and left tidy. Doing the easy items first and the fiddly ones last helps the visit run smoothly.

Heavy or awkward items may get a second person's help. If something turns out to be unsuitable for the wall, for example a heavy mirror where no stud is available, the pro will explain the options before going ahead.

After the last item the pro tidies, removes tape and leaves any spare hardware with you. The standard scope is hanging things you supply. Repairing old holes, painting and assembling furniture are not included.

What moves the price within the range

The number of items is the obvious factor, and a full list of five with mixed weights sits higher than a list of two. Heavy pieces, large mirrors and long shelves take more time than small frames. Brick, stone and plaster walls take longer and carry an added charge.

Spread matters too. Five items on one wall are quicker than five items across four rooms and a stairwell. Awkward positions, such as high on a stair wall, add equipment and care. Preparation helps a lot. A clear list with sizes and marked positions keeps the visit within the range.

If the list grows beyond five, the extra items can usually be handled in the same trip but are quoted as an addition. Mention the likely count at the start.

One visit or several small jobs?

Bundling is usually the better choice. There is a single arrival, the wall checks are done once, and you end up with a consistent finish across the house. It also lets the pro tell you honestly which items suit the wall and which need a different approach.

Separate visits make sense if you are not sure where things should go, if you are still buying items, or if part of the list is a bigger job.
